SoFi vs Upgrade Personal Loans: Fees, Rates, and the Real Winner

2026-07-18 · 7 min read · Lenders
Some lender links are affiliate links, always labeled. Comparison tables and calculator results never change based on commissions.
In short: SoFi and Upgrade personal loans compared with July 2026 numbers: APR ranges, the origination fee only one of them always charges, funding speed, and which borrower each lender actually wants.

SoFi and Upgrade both let you check a rate with a soft pull, both fund fast, and both show up on the same best-of lists. The similarity ends there. SoFi is built for borrowers with solid credit who want a large, clean loan with no required fees. Upgrade is built for the borrowers premium lenders decline, and it charges an origination fee on every loan it makes. Comparing them head to head is really a question about which side of that line you stand on, and what the crossing costs.

This guide runs the numbers published on both lenders' own pages as of July 2026, works the fee math in real dollars, and closes with a recommendation by credit profile. If you want the three-way version that adds LightStream, that lives in our SoFi vs LightStream vs Upgrade comparison.

Two identical rows matter as much as the different ones: both lenders run 2 to 7 year terms, and both show you an estimated rate without touching your score. Whatever you do, checking both costs you nothing but ten minutes.

What the advertised ranges hide

Headline ranges are marketing. The fine print is where the two lenders separate.

SoFi's 6.99% floor is real but narrow. According to SoFi's rates page as of July 2026, that floor applies to the 2-year term, with the autopay discount (0.25%) and the member rate discount (0.25%) both switched on, and only on loan options without an origination fee. Stretch the term and the floor climbs: 9.50% at 5 years and 11.90% at 7 years, while the ceiling holds at 35.49% across every term. If you are shopping a long consolidation loan, the rate you should anchor on is the 5-year floor, not the number in the banner.

Upgrade's floor works the same way in the other direction. The 7.74% bottom of its range, listed in the FAQ on Upgrade's personal loans page as of July 2026, is what excellent credit plus discounts can reach. Upgrade offers rate cuts for setting up autopay, for sending loan money directly to creditors you are paying off, and for securing the loan with a car or even home fixtures. A fair-credit borrower with none of those levers should expect to land in the upper half of the range, and that is before the fee.

The origination fee gap, in dollars

This is the section that decides most SoFi vs Upgrade matchups, so let us use Upgrade's own example. The illustration on Upgrade's personal loans page, as of July 2026, shows a $10,000 loan over 36 months at a 17.98% APR, built from a 14.32% interest rate plus a 5% origination fee of $500. You sign for $10,000, the fee comes out of the proceeds, and $9,500 lands in your account. The payment is $343.33 a month.

Run that to the end and the shape of the deal is clear: 36 payments of $343.33 total $12,359.88, which is $2,859.88 more than the $9,500 you actually received. And if you genuinely need a full $10,000 in hand, you cannot borrow $10,000. At a 5% fee you would need to sign for about $10,526, and the fee on that larger balance runs about $526. The quoted interest rate never mentions any of this. The APR does, which is why 14.32% became 17.98% in Upgrade's own illustration, and why APR is the only number worth comparing across these two lenders.

SoFi plays the fee game in reverse. There is no required origination fee, and the ranges on its rates page reflect the no-fee options. Instead, SoFi lets you choose a fee in exchange for a lower rate. That trade can win on a long loan you hold to maturity, and it loses if you repay early, because a fee paid up front never refunds itself. One caveat belongs in writing: Credible's July 2026 review notes that SoFi loans originated through partner Cross River Bank carry a 9.99% origination fee, so read the disclosure line on your specific offer before assuming the fee is zero.

Who actually gets approved

Upgrade's pitch is access. NerdWallet's 2026 review lists a minimum credit score of 600, one of the lower bars among mainstream online lenders, and Upgrade accepts joint applications and secured structures that can pull a borderline file over the line. The $1,000 minimum loan also matters more than it looks: plenty of people need $2,500, not $25,000, and SoFi simply does not play below $5,000.

SoFi does not publish a minimum score. Its pricing table does the talking instead: the good outcomes cluster around strong credit, verifiable income, and clean files. Third-party reviewers consistently describe SoFi approvals as good-to-excellent credit territory, and the $5,000 floor plus the $100,000 ceiling tell you which customer the product was designed around. If your score sits in the low 600s, a SoFi prequalification costs nothing, but Upgrade is the realistic door.

Funding speed and the consolidation detail

Both lenders are fast, with different fine print. SoFi's same-day funding disclosure says most borrowers receive money the same day when the loan is approved and signed by 5:30 PM Eastern on a business day, with the usual carve-outs for verification snags. Upgrade's page says funds arrive within one business day of clearing necessary verifications, and that verification step (income documents, identity checks) is where first-time applicants lose a day or two.

For debt consolidators there is a quieter feature worth more than speed: both lenders can send loan money directly to the creditors you are paying off. Upgrade advertises it as a discount trigger, and SoFi's direct pay program takes 0.25% off the rate when at least half the proceeds go straight to eligible creditors, per the disclosures on SoFi's personal loans page. Direct payment removes the classic consolidation failure mode where the money visits your checking account and never leaves. If consolidation is the mission, turn the feature on at either lender, and read our personal loan vs credit card breakdown before you commit at all.

The verdict, by borrower

Credit in the 700s and a need of $5,000 or more: start with SoFi. No required fee means the cash-received line equals the loan amount, the APR range starts lower, and the optional-fee lever is there if you want to buy the rate down on a loan you will hold full term.

Credit in the low-to-mid 600s: Upgrade is the practical answer, and the job is damage control on the fee. Prequalify, look at the APR and the cash-received line together, and if the fee lands near the 9.99% top of the range on a small loan, compare it against a local credit union before signing anything.

Need less than $5,000: Upgrade by default, since SoFi does not go that low. Need more than $50,000: SoFi by default, since Upgrade stops there.

And in every case, the procedure beats the brand: get both soft-pull quotes for the same amount and term, put the two APRs side by side, multiply payment by months, subtract the cash you actually receive, and take the smaller number. Our guide on how lenders decide your rate explains why the same file gets such different quotes from these two.

Frequently asked questions

Is Upgrade or SoFi better for fair credit?

Upgrade. NerdWallet's 2026 review lists a 600 minimum score, and Upgrade offers joint applications and secured options that help borderline files. SoFi publishes no minimum but its product is aimed at good-to-excellent credit, with loans starting at $5,000. A fair-credit borrower should still expect Upgrade pricing in the upper part of its 7.74% to 35.99% range, plus the origination fee.

Does Upgrade always charge an origination fee?

Yes. Every Upgrade personal loan carries an origination fee, 1.85% to 9.99% per NerdWallet's 2026 review, deducted from the proceeds before the money reaches you. Upgrade's own example shows a $10,000 loan with a 5% fee delivering $9,500 in cash. The fee is included in the APR, which is why the APR runs above the quoted interest rate.

Does SoFi charge an origination fee on personal loans?

Not a required one. The APR ranges on SoFi's rates page as of July 2026 reflect loan options with no origination fee, and SoFi instead offers an optional fee that buys a lower rate. The exception: Credible's July 2026 review notes that SoFi loans originated through Cross River Bank carry a 9.99% fee, so check which entity originates your specific offer.

How fast do SoFi and Upgrade actually fund a loan?

SoFi says most borrowers receive funds the same day when the loan is approved and signed by 5:30 PM Eastern on a business day. Upgrade says money arrives within one business day of clearing verifications, and the verification step is where extra time gets added. In practice both are among the fastest options if your paperwork is clean.
